We at the SFV-Glendale LitMingle are dedicated to the pursuit of writing and illustrating children’s literature. We support, guide, and nurture budding authors and illustrators as well as established authors and illustrators. Our goal is to create quality works of fiction, non-fiction and poetry that educate, entertain, and inspire children of all ages.
LitMingle regular Denise Clemmensen wants everyone to know, “The San Fernando Valley Montrose Authors/Illustrators LitMingle is a warm, inviting, learning and sharing environment. Over the years I have found both direction and inspiration. I have met many wonderful, encouraging, and talented artists. I somehow always come home more uplifted and invigorated than when I left. The LitMingle is a good place to be.”
Jen Swain ran the first meeting in April 2007 at the Montrose-Crescenta Branch Library and continues to co-coordinate for us. At SFV-Glendale LitMingle, we connect to discuss a variety of topics from “What Makes a Good Illustration or Copy” to “Setting Our Goals for the Year.” We have guest speakers, outings, visits to galleries and museums, our own illustration gallery show, sketch crawls, drawing at the zoo, process of picture book dummies, self-promotion, chalk and art festivals, sketchbook night, OC Children’s Book Fest, history of Illustrators Bingo, Wine, Chocolate, and KidLit Party, and more.
Our group currently meets the second Thursday of each month in the cozy confines of the nation’s oldest children’s bookstore, Once Upon A Time, in Montrose, CA. The surrounding walls stacked with books are an inspiration to us all, and we freely toss around ideas and suggestions. “We have an eclectic group of illustrators and storytellers, including comic book enthusiasts, animation artists, fine artists and doodlers,” says mingler Frans Vischer. “We share our backgrounds and stories, heartbreaks and triumphs, and support each other in our causes. Our fearless leaders, Jen and Rita, set the themes for meetings, but we bring in whatever books or artwork or stories that turn us on and makes for good discussions. Come visit us some time!”
