SCBWI SoCal has some great events coming up!
May 5-7, 2017 – SCBWI SoCal Spring Retreat 2017: Finding Gold
YA and middle-grade writers, now’s your chance to work on your novel with the support of professionals in a scenic mountain retreat. Our goals? We want you to find the gold in your manuscript and query letter and inspire you to polish your work until we all holler “Eureka!” Attendees will participate in four critique-group sessions led by an editor, agent, and published author. You will hear speaker presentations on the craft of writing as well as valuable feedback on query letters and what makes them shine. Plus, you’ll get to mingle with the editor, agent, authors, and fellow Forty-Niner writers during happy hour.
This three-day, two-night retreat includes lodging, meals, critique groups, speaker presentations, sunrise meditations, hiking, campfires under the stars, and writing time. Because we want to keep the critique groups cozy, we are restricting the number of attendees to 23.
Taquitz Pines is tucked away in the mile-high pine forests of the San Jacinto Mountains, just a short ten-minute stroll to the quaint town of Idyllwild with its unique shops and art galleries. There are a multitude of quiet reflection spots throughout camp – the perfect setting for a writer’s retreat.
Dates: May 5-7: Friday at 1:00 PM to Sunday at 1:00 PM
Location: Tahquitz Pines in Idyllwild, California, 55251 South Circle Dr., Idyllwild, CA 92549
Price: $375 for SCBWI members, $395 for non-members
Written critiques will also be available: $45 for SCBWI members, $65 for non-members
The guest editor, agent and two published authors will be announced soon! Register here.
April 1, 2017, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM – Writing Intensive: Creating a World in 800 Words or Less
In picture books, less is more. Learn how to build a rich world for readers in small word counts. In this intensive, you’ll try your hand at writing juicy verbs, creating repeating patterns, employing perfect similes and metaphors, and cutting story text until it becomes a perfect read-aloud.
Location TBD in Orange County. Register here.
