Similar to SCBWI-LA’s annual Twitter Banner Contest, Kite Tales wants to invite our members to take part in #KTIllustrates, a new illustration contest to reward and promote your work! The contest will begin with a prompt, but it’s up to you on how you want to illustrate it. It can be either conceptual or literal, spot or spread, and keeping the idea of the prompt as it would apply to children’s books. We encourage every medium, genre, and age range! (Maybe you’d be inspired to do a cover piece for a middle grade, for example?) All are welcome, as long as the final entry stays within the guidelines posted on the entry page.
Each entry will be considered for a chance to win a $20 gift certificate to ArtSupply Warehouse and the winner will also have their artwork and any professional contact information published on Kite Tales as well as SCBWI-LA’s other social media platforms. #KTIllustrates winners will also be encouraged to pitch an article or participate in a follow up interview with Kite Tales. Runners up will receive honorable mention and their entry included on the Kite Tales winner announcement.
Our First Prompt
Illustrate the following passage as single page or double-spread:
“If your heels are nimble and light, you may get there by candle-light…”
To be considered for the first contest, please follow the guidelines posted on the entry page here. All entries must be received by 11/20/20 and the winners will be announced on Kite Tales on 12/09/20. If you submit after the deadline your entry will not be considered, but you are encouraged to submit another piece for the next contest after the next prompt is announced with the winning article.
Other rules to note:
- You may only win the Grand Prize once per calendar year.
- Runners Up are still eligible to win the Grand Prize next round.
- Only winners will be notified regarding their entry and contest standing. Please do not email Kite Tales or Los Angeles SCBWI staff to inquire about your entry.
Kite Tales reserves the right to reject any entry we deem inappropriate. Kite Tales reserves the right to declare no winners if we do not receive enough appropriate entries. If you submit after the entry due date for the current contest, your entry will not be considered. Winning does not guarantee representation or publishing contract. Entries will be judged based on merit by our anonymous judges.
